Portraits on the Beach
Last month took me to beautiful Lyme Regis on the west coast of Dorset to make some childrens portraits.
Lyme Regis is a dangerous place. Not so much for its rugged jurassic coastline or for it’s interesting traffic system, but more so for its wonderful, independent shops. In order to minimise damage to my credit card, I discipline myself to leave my home as late as possible in order to give myself no time before the shoot to peruse. I also book another shoot for the afternoon so I have no time afterwards.
So, Alice and Henry had been driven by mum and dad all the way from Oxfordshire to spend a couple of days away not far from Lyme – having been gifted one of my portrait vouchers at Christmas, this was the perfect time to use it. I also, love shooting on the beach especially out of season when the light is a bit tamer and the fair weather crowds yet to venture onto the coast. Lyme is perfect as it has an abundance of locations, quirky streets, sandy beach, wonderful textured rocks and a wonderful harbour of course made famous for its role in The French Lieutenants woman. Despite the wonderful light, the wind was sharp and so kept Alice and Henry ( and me!) running around to keep us warm and smiling..
I’ve checked the data from my camera and the shoot lasted just 15 minutes, not because I had to keep Alice and Henrys attention span which is sometimes the case, but because they just gave so much to me in a short period of time. And they were hungry! In fact, I could quite happily kept going all morning and spent some time rock pooling and fossil hunting, Alice and Henry were great company, chatty, excited and inquisitive
There is never a specific time that I take on each of my portrait shoots – it is what it is and is always in the hands of the children. Some need a little more time to connect, others jump straight in and lead the way.
Here are a few of my favourites from my morning with Alice and Henry.
